The Fan Museum

Galleries & Museums

Description:

The award-winning Fan Museum is home to 4,000 fans and fan leaves from all over the world, dating from the 11th century onwards and displayed in changing exhibitions. The delightful Orangery – where afternoon tea is served on Tuesdays and Sundays - overlooks a Japanese style garden. Gift shop.

Sleeping Beauties Fan Collection from Castle Friedenstein, Gotha. Like the Sleeping Beauty, a unique collection of fans collected by Duke Augustus of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg in the early 19th century has long lain dormant at Schloss Friedenstein in Gotha, East Germany. Now the collection has come out of wraps and has now been shown in several locations in Germany. Never before, however, has it travelled to anywhere else in Europe. Most of it will be seen, for the first time, at The Fan Museum, between 4 November 2008 and 11 January 2009. The Gotha fans will be shown together with some fans with similarities from The Fan Museum’s collections.

Admission: Adult £4.00.

Opening Times: Tues-Sat 11.00-17.00, Sun 12.00-17.00. Closed Mon.

Visit Time: 1 hour.
